IN PICS: Celebrations in the Spanish capital as Real Madrid beat Liverpool to win the Champions League final

ACROSS the city, Real Madrid supporters erupted in delight as the whistle sounded to end the match at the Stade de France on Saturday night.

Scenes of celebration filled the capital as people took to the streets after watching the Spanish giants beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final in Paris.

The Gran Via was impassable to cars as fans, many wearing their team’s white shirts, filled the thoroughfare as seen in this video sent in by Olive Press reader Deirdre Carney.

Others hopped in their cars to drive through the streets honking their horns and displaying the blue and white flags of their favorite club as they lifted the European Cup title for 14e time.

Thousands of fans packed the Plaza de Cibeles in the center of the city.

“We are the kings of Europe”, they shouted.

The Cibeles Fountain at the southern end of tree-lined Avenida Castellana is the traditional meeting point for Madrileños to celebrate their sporting triumphs.

And it’s where the team will hold a victory parade on Sunday night during an open-top bus tour presenting the Champions League trophy to their fans.

The celebrations will continue at their home stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu, on Sunday evening from 8:45 p.m.
