Granada confirm signing of ex-Man City youngster Alpha Dionkou
La Liga side Granada have confirmed the signing of former Manchester City Under-23 player Alpha Dionkou.
The 19-year-old joined City from Mallorca in 2017, playing regularly for the Under-23 team in Premier League 2 last season.
The youngster was tipped to be a star for the future, with City transfer chiefs considering signing a coup in 2017, beating the interest of European giants such as Barcelona.
He’s a player Pep Guardiola has noted enough to be called up to first-team training on several occasions. Former City center-back Eric Garcia was one of the first to wish him luck on his new trip to Granada.
And the Spanish team announced the signing of the Senegal full-back on his club’s website, indicating that he would immediately be loaned to San Fernando CD in the Primeira Division RFEF.
The dynamic defender has dual nationality between Senegal and Spain, representing both nations in international junior football. However, it appears Dionkou is targeting his country of birth, making five appearances for Senegal at the Under-20 level since his debut in 2019.
To announce his departure, the youngster took to Instagram to write a heartfelt message to display his affection for the club he signed for at just 15 years old.
He wrote: “It’s time to close a chapter in my career.
“I have nothing but words of gratitude to everyone I have met at this great club. This constant support has helped me become a better person.
“You gave me the opportunity to make my dream come true. I feel privileged to have worn the jersey of this incredible club during this time.
“The time has come to continue to grow as a professional and to look for new horizons that allow me to grow as a footballer. Thank you, Cityzens.”
Garcia was joined by Joao Cancelo, who wrote “Suerte Hermano” alongside other messages of affection from fellow City Academy product Liam Delap, James McAtee, Ben Knight, Morgan Rogers and Claudio Gomes.
